Full definition
Basic condition-monitoring technique using the inspector's senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell) to detect equipment anomalies. Detectable symptoms: oil/grease/steam leaks, abnormal vibrations, unusual noises (knocking, squealing), burning smells, overheating, visible corrosion, wear and physical damage. Low cost, executable daily by trained operators. First line of defense in autonomous maintenance (TPM). Must be documented in inspection route format with reference values and tolerances.
