V-Ring Seal

An all-rubber axial lip seal that rotates with the shaft and seals against a stationary surface (bearing housing face, end cover, or washer) perpendicular to the shaft axis. Unlike radial lip seals that seal against the shaft circumference, V-ring seals seal against a flat face, which can be an unmachined surface (the V-ring lip conforms to surface irregularities). The characteristic V-shape in cross-section provides: a flexible sealing lip, a stretch-fit body that grips the shaft by its own elasticity (no adhesive or set screws needed), and centrifugal stiffening at high speeds (the lip opens outward at high RPM). Speed: up to 12,000 RPM depending on size. Temperature: -40 to +150°C (FKM available for higher). Materials: NBR (standard), FKM (high temperature), and silicone. V-ring seals excel as secondary (exclusion) seals protecting primary bearings from external contamination — they are installed outboard of the bearing to keep out dust, water, and particles. The seal does not contact the shaft bore, so it adds zero friction in the radial direction. Per manufacturer specifications (SKF, Freudenberg). Sizes: 4 mm to 600+ mm shaft diameter. Designation example: V-40A = 40 mm shaft, type A (standard). Brands: SKF (the originator and market leader — SKF V-Ring), Freudenberg, CR Seals.

Full definition

V-ring seals are a specialized type of axial lip seal designed to provide reliable sealing against contaminants while allowing for rotational movement of the shaft. Their unique V-shaped cross-section allows them to conform to irregularities in the sealing surface, making them suitable for use in various applications where traditional radial lip seals may fail. Unlike radial lip seals that seal against the circumference of a shaft, V-ring seals apply a sealing force against a flat surface, such as a bearing housing face or end cover. This design means that the V-ring can accommodate slight misalignments and surface imperfections without compromising the seal's integrity.

The sealing lip of the V-ring is made from flexible elastomeric materials, commonly NBR (nitrile butadiene rubber) for standard applications, with options for FKM (fluoroelastomer) for high-temperature scenarios and silicone for specific chemical resistance. V-ring seals can operate effectively at temperatures ranging from -40 to +150°C, and with sizes ranging from 4 mm to over 600 mm in shaft diameter, they offer versatility across different industrial applications. They can handle rotational speeds of up to 12,000 RPM, depending on the specific model and size, making them ideal for high-speed machinery.

One of the main advantages of V-ring seals is that they act as exclusion seals, protecting primary bearings from external contaminants such as dust, water, and debris. By installing them outboard of the bearing, they help prolong the life of the bearings by preventing the ingress of harmful substances. Additionally, since the seal does not contact the shaft bore, it generates zero radial friction, which is beneficial for energy efficiency and reduces wear on the shaft itself. Proper installation and selection are crucial to maximize their effectiveness and ensure a long service life in demanding applications.

What you need to know

  • What you need to know: - V-ring seals are axial lip seals that rotate with the shaft and seal against a flat surface. - Temperature range: -40 to +150°C; FKM versions can withstand higher temperatures. - Suitable for shaft diameters from 4 mm to 600+ mm, with designs allowing speeds up to 12,000 RPM. - Common materials include NBR, FKM, and silicone for various applications. - V-ring seals serve as secondary seals, protecting bearings from dust and water.

Industrial applications

  • 1Used in automotive applications to seal wheel bearings and prevent contamination from road debris.
  • 2Applied in industrial machinery to protect motor bearings from dust and moisture in manufacturing environments.
  • 3Utilized in agricultural equipment to seal shafts in harsh conditions, ensuring operational reliability.
  • 4Employed in HVAC systems to prevent leakage of air and contamination around rotating components.

Common mistakes

  • Using V-ring seals in applications where radial sealing is required, leading to seal failure.
  • Failing to ensure proper alignment during installation, which can compromise the seal's performance.
  • Overlooking the material compatibility with the working environment, leading to premature seal degradation.

Pro tip

Ensure the sealing surface is clean and free of sharp edges before installation to enhance the longevity of the V-ring seal.
