Full definition
SBR rubber sheet, made from styrene-butadiene rubber, is one of the most common general-purpose industrial rubber materials available today. It is economically produced and widely utilized due to its favorable balance of properties that make it suitable for various applications. The material provides good abrasion resistance, which is essential in environments where wear and tear are prevalent. In terms of mechanical properties, SBR exhibits a hardness range of 40-80 Shore A, with 60-70 Shore A being the most commonly used. This level of hardness allows for a combination of flexibility and strength, making it suitable for applications requiring moderate tensile strength and elongation. The tensile strength typically ranges from 5-15 MPa, while elongation at break can reach between 200-400%, indicating its capacity to stretch before failing.
SBR rubber sheets are typically produced in standard thicknesses ranging from 1.5 mm to 25 mm, with widths of 1,000 mm, 1,200 mm, and 1,500 mm available in rolls of 5-20 meters. The sheets are commonly black due to the addition of carbon black, which enhances durability and UV resistance, although they can be made in other colors upon request. However, SBR rubber has limitations, particularly its poor resistance to oils, fuels, and solvents, making it unsuitable for applications involving these substances. Furthermore, SBR rubber also exhibits inadequate ozone resistance, which limits its outdoor applications unless appropriately protected. As a result, it is predominantly used in indoor or controlled environments.
Applications of SBR rubber sheets are diverse, including general-purpose gaskets for water and air applications (but not oil), protective floor coverings, skid-resistant surfaces, workbench tops, bumpers and guards, and sound isolation pads. Additionally, SBR sheets can be reinforced with fabric layers (1-2 ply nylon or polyester) to improve tensile strength and dimensional stability, thus expanding their utility in more demanding situations. Due to its affordability and versatility, SBR rubber sheet remains the go-to choice for many industries when specific chemical resistance is not a requirement, positioning it as the default material in various industrial applications.
