Modular flooring systems consist of interlocking tiles designed for quick installation and easy maintenance. These tiles, which connect without adhesives, utilize various interlocking mechanisms such as puzzle connectors, snap fittings, or hidden dovetail joints. This design allows for a 'dry-lay' installation method, meaning the flooring can be laid, removed, and relocated without the need for special tools or adhesives. Such features make modular flooring an excellent choice for temporary facilities, rental spaces, trade shows, and environments that require frequent access to underfloor areas.
The modular tiles are typically made from materials like rubber, PVC, and polypropylene. Rubber tiles are favored for their superior impact absorption and durability, making them ideal for high-traffic areas such as gyms and workshops. PVC tiles offer a broad range of colors at a more economical price point, while polypropylene is often used for drainage solutions in wet areas. The most common tile sizes are 500×500 mm and 1,000×1,000 mm for flat tiles, with smaller sizes like 300×300 mm used for grating purposes. Tile thickness can range from 5 mm to 50 mm, depending on the specific application and expected traffic loads.
A key consideration in modular flooring is the interlocking mechanism, which must be robust enough to withstand the anticipated traffic without separating. In high-traffic scenarios, tighter-fitting connectors or border restraints may be necessary to ensure stability. The installation process is notably faster than traditional adhesive-bonded flooring systems, with a 100 m² area being tiled in just 2-4 hours by two workers. This efficiency, coupled with the ease of replacing damaged sections, makes modular flooring a practical solution for various industrial and commercial applications.
