Bathtub Curve

Graph of failure rate (λ) vs. time modeling the life behavior of components in three periods: infant mortality (decreasing λ, 0-3% of total time), useful life (constant λ, ~90% of time) and wear-out (increasing λ, end of life). Useful for scheduling burn-in of new equipment, defining preventive maintenance intervals and planning replacements. Based on Weibull distribution with β<1, β=1 and β>1 respectively. Reference: MIL-HDBK-217.
