Steel cord belts are a type of heavy-duty conveyor belt that are specifically designed to handle high-tension loads and facilitate the efficient transport of bulk materials over long distances. These belts are reinforced with longitudinal galvanized steel wire cables, which are embedded within a rubber matrix. This construction provides the necessary strength and durability for demanding applications, particularly in mining and bulk material handling. The steel cords are typically arranged in a parallel configuration, allowing the belt to withstand significant tensile forces while maintaining structural integrity during operation.
The designation of steel cord belts follows a standardized format, identified as ST followed by a numerical value that represents the breaking strength in newtons per millimeter of width (N/mm). Common designations include ST 630, ST 800, ST 1000, and so forth, with the numbers indicating the maximum tensile strength capabilities of the belt. The cable diameters can range from 3.5 mm to 11.5 mm, depending on the specific grade of the belt. Unlike textile belts, steel cord belts exhibit minimal elongation at working tension, typically ranging from just 0.1% to 0.3%. This low elongation factor allows for exceptionally long conveyor systems, capable of spanning distances greater than 30 kilometers in a single flight without requiring extensive take-up travel.
Splicing of steel cord belts is a critical factor in their installation and maintenance. The only acceptable method for splicing these belts is hot vulcanization, where the cables are overlapped in a specific pattern to ensure optimal strength and durability. Mechanical splicing is not feasible due to the inherent properties of the steel cords and the high tension they operate under. The top and bottom covers of steel cord belts typically have thicknesses ranging from 4 mm to 10 mm for the top cover and 3 mm to 6 mm for the bottom cover, providing added protection against wear and environmental conditions. According to ISO 15236 and DIN 22131 standards, these belts must meet stringent requirements for performance and safety in industrial applications.
Steel cord belts are predominantly used in overland mining conveyors, port ship-loaders, and quarries, where their robust construction and high tensile strength are essential for efficient material handling.
