Full definition
A slurry pump is a specialized centrifugal pump engineered to handle abrasive mixtures, known as slurries, which consist of water and mineral particles commonly found in mining, dredging, and mineral processing applications. These pumps are built to endure harsh conditions and are critical in transporting slurries that have a high solids content, which can reach concentrations of 60-70% by weight. The design of a slurry pump focuses on durability and efficiency, utilizing materials and structural features that can withstand the wear and tear associated with moving abrasive materials. The impeller and casing are the primary components that experience wear; hence, they are constructed from various materials depending on the operational requirements. High-chrome white iron, with a composition of approximately 27% chromium and a hardness of 600-700 HBN, is typically used for coarse abrasive slurries, while natural rubber linings, with a hardness of 40-55 Shore A, are preferred for fine particle handling due to their superior performance in impact abrasion and longevity, often lasting 2-3 times longer than chrome in many applications. Polyurethane is another material option, ideal for fine abrasion scenarios at low concentrations.
Slurry pumps are classified according to ISO 8142, which outlines the design and performance criteria for such pumping equipment. Key design features include wide passages that allow for the passage of large solids, replaceable liners for ease of maintenance, and heavy-duty bearings that support the operational integrity of the pump under high loads. The pumps also have various sealing options, including gland packing, expeller seals, and mechanical seals, to prevent leakage and ensure efficient operation. The hydraulic performance of slurry pumps can vary significantly, with heads ranging from 10 to 60 meters per stage and flow rates that can exceed 10,000 m³/h, depending on the specific application and manufacturer performance curves. In industrial settings, rubber-lined pumps are predominantly used in grinding, flotation, and tailings applications, while chrome pumps find their niche in coarse crushing circuit duties. Major brands in the slurry pump market include Metso, Weir Minerals, KSB (GIW), Flowserve, and Xylem.
